"Sexual assault on campus is prevalent. If you ask a room full of college students if they know someone who has been assaulted, chances are almost everyone would raise their hands. I have seen it happen before in my feminist and gender studies class where the teacher was doing an activity to raise awareness about sexual assault. Every woman I know at this campus has experienced some version of verbal, emotional, or physical assault. It is a sad and devastating reality that we all live with. I’m not much of a party type, but occasionally when I do go out to frat parties on campus, I can’t help but be fearful of what is going to happen if I get too drunk. I have heard countless stories of women who experienced devastating things at these parties on campus. These men walk around free, no matter how many women come forward. They are protected by the wealth and power of “brotherhood” and privilege. I can also name a handful of men on this campus who have been accused of sexual assault. It is even more painful to know that I have been friends with some of them at one point. It could have been me. But universities don’t care about women. They care more about protecting the name and reputation of the institution more than anything. These men walk free on campus while the rest of us have to navigate the world in fear of their heinous actions."
